In the facilities of melting and refining copper concentrate, and as a result of this activity and as integral part of the production process , iron silicate in granulated form is produced.

For its production, a flash furnace is used. This furnace carries out the mineral fusion almost instantly, using the energy provided by the combustion of sulphur and providing high concentrated sulphurous gases streams which are optimal for further treatment in sulfuric acid plants. Disposal of iron is carried out by the addition of silica dioxide as a flux. In the combustion of the concentrate, this silica combined with iron oxides produces silicates , in particular fayalita (SIO2) FeO , resulting in the production of slag. In the bed of the flash furnace , the copper slag is separated by gravity , emptying the obtained slag by regular tapping in an electric furnace. The purpose of this furnace is the cleaning of not decanted copper particles through a reduction of the magnetite present in the slag with coke. Following, the slag is cooled down with a cold water jet system. This product is an stable chemical iron silicate.

Multiple environmental authorities have confirmed that iron silicate should not be considered a waste but a by-product with the following applications: Concrete fabrication , cement, building materials, filling materials (excluding soil recovery/restoration ) granular sub -base , blasting abrasive material and draining layer.
